If Sam Galeotos wins the Republican Primary next week, he could become the first Cheyenne native elected Governor of Wyoming in nearly a century.

Of the 32 people to serve as Governor since Wyoming was granted statehood in 1890, and the 10 Territorial Governors before them, only one was born in Cheyenne. We've had Governors from Lusk, Lander, Kemmerer, Thermopolis and even New York City, but only one from the Capital City.

Robert Carey was born in Cheyenne in 1878. The son of Wyoming's eighth Governor Joseph Carey, Robert studied at Yale University before following in his father's footsteps and becoming the 11th Governor of the Cowboy State in 1919.

Jackson has produced more Governors than any other town in Wyoming. Three Jackson natives have been elected, including current Governor Matt Mead.

Galeotos is the only candidate in the Republican primary who claims Cheyenne as his hometown. Mark Gordon was raised on a ranch near Kaycee. Harriet Hageman grew up outside of Fort Laramie. Foster Friess has called Cody home since the 1990s. Bill Dahlin was born and raised in Sheridan. Dr. Taylor Haynes lived and worked in Cheyenne for years, but now lists Laramie as his primary residence.

Cheyenne native Rex Wilde is one of four candidates in the Democratic primary, facing Gillette's Mary Throne, Carbon County's Kenneth Casner, and Rock Springs resident Michael Allen Green.
